Marriage & Relationship Counselling North Bay and Huntsville

Couples Therapy
& Relationship Counselling

Relationship & couples therapy at O.W.L. Counselling & Wellness is for partners — at any stage, in any structure — who want their relationship to feel like a team again. We work with couples in-person at our North Bay and Huntsville offices and virtually across Ontario.

“We work in a way that’s Own. Willful. Living. Helping you make conscious, value-aligned choices rather than running on autopilot or
other people’s expectations.”

When These Are Showing Up in Your Relationship

  • The same conflict keeps surfacing — different topic,
    same loop.

  • One or both of you avoids hard conversations to
    "keep the peace."

  • You feel more like roommates or co-parents than partners.

  • Trust was damaged — by infidelity, finances, dishonesty, or addiction — and you don't know how to come back from it.

  • A major life transition (moving, kids, a new job, illness, a grief) has left the relationship strained.

  • Sex and intimacy have changed and neither of you knows how to talk about it.

  • One or both of you is asking, quietly, whether you should
    still be together.

  • You're both willing to try, but something keeps getting in the way.

Couples Therapy
Can Help You

  • Communicate without the fight: break out of the same argument on repeat.

  • Repair after a breach of trust: rebuild safety at a pace that works for both partners.

  • Reconnect emotionally and physically: close the distance that's grown without naming itself.

“You still love each other. But something's changed.”

Maybe conversations turn into arguments faster than they used to. Maybe the silences are getting longer. Maybe trust took a hit. Or maybe you just want to feel close again and don't know how to bridge the gap. Couples don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy, and the partners who come in before it gets bad are the ones who often see the biggest change.

What Is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy is a structured space for partners to look at the patterns in your relationship — what's working, what isn't, and what's underneath the surface — with a therapist who is not on either of your "sides." It's not about who's right or wrong. It's about understanding the cycle the two (or more) of you keep getting stuck in, and building real tools to step out of it.

We work in a way that's Own. Willful. Living.  We help each partner make conscious, values-aligned choices about how they show up in the relationship, rather than running on old scripts.

Our Approach to Relationship Care

Our approach is empathetic, collaborative, and deeply attuned to the unique dynamic between you. We hold space for all partners to feel seen, validated, and respected. Therapy at O.W.L. is trauma-informed and anti-oppressiveto honour each partner's history, identity, and the specific dynamics that shape your connection.

Depending on what you're working on, your therapist may draw from:

  • Gottman-informed approaches: practical tools for communication, conflict, and the "Sound Relationship House."
(We are Gottman-informed; ask your therapist about their specific training during the consultation.)

  • Attachment-based work: making sense of how earlier attachment experiences show up in current closeness, conflict, and trust.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) for couples: exploring the parts of each partner that surface in conflict
(the protector, the wounded part, the inner critic).

  • Motivational Interviewing: useful when one partner is more ambivalent about change or the relationship itself.

  • Trauma-informed care: especially when infidelity, abuse, addiction, or grief is in the picture.

We focus on helping you break negative cycles, rebuild trust, and develop practical tools for lasting growth, not just feel heard for an hour and leave.

What Couples
Therapy Supports

We see couples in-person at our North Bay and Huntsville offices, and virtually across Ontario — including Sudbury, Parry Sound, Timmins, and the Muskoka region. Virtual sessions are especially useful when partners live in different cities, when shift work makes scheduling hard, or when one partner travels.

Inclusive & Diverse Relationships

O.W.L. welcomes clients from all walks of life and is committed to anti-oppressive, affirming care.

2SLGBTQ+ Affirming Couples Therapy

We are listed on Rainbow Health Ontario and provide identity-affirming therapy for queer, trans, and 2SLGBTQ+ couples. Aaron Sinclair has 18+ years of experience supporting 2SLGBTQ+ clients and brings deep familiarity with the specific challenges queer relationships navigate — from in-laws to coming out at different paces, from chosen family dynamics to the impact of broader social pressure on the couple itself.

Polyamory, Ethical
Non-Monogamy & Relationship Anarchy

If you've been searching for a therapist who actually understands consensual non-monogamy (CNM), polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, or relationship anarchy, you've found one. We work with multi-partner constellations, hierarchical and non-hierarchical structures, and couples opening up — without pathologizing the relationship structure itself.

Diverse Power Dynamics & Intersectional Identities

We honour the way race, culture, neurodivergence, disability, immigration history, and other intersecting identities shape what gets brought into the relationship and the room.
